Stuck in a Rut? Check out 5 Simple Steps to Living a Better Life

In today’s world it is common for people to go from having a successful and exciting life to suddenly being in a rut. We often get caught up in the hustle of life and when we finally have a second to breath we are asking ourselves where the hell are we and how did we even get here. I know this from personal experience. If you are a common visitor of my blog you may have realized this as well. I have been trying to write this post for about two months now but I never really could, until today. That is because I have finally gotten out of my rut. So in this post I am going to share with you my 5 simple steps for living a better life and getting out of a rut.

Step 1: Focus on moving forward

I was trying to figure out how I got in a rut in the first place and I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere but when I focused on how to get out I quickly noticed results. This step is going to mean something a little different for everyone but in general, simply change up your routine. This doesn’t have to be anything dramatic small changes make big differences. The key is if you make a small change but it isn’t making a difference try something else until you see results. I know this seems very simple and general but once you have read through all the steps this one should make more sense and have a more specific meaning to you.

Step 2: Set goals

In order to focus on moving forward and making change to get out of your rut you must set a goal. Weather it be big or small by setting a goal you are giving yourself something to work towards. It is important when setting a goal to make it something that is achievable but is not easy. Also make it something specific. General goals are easier to get lazy and give up on.

When I was in a rut I found myself unmotivated and always sitting on the couch watching tv. So I set my first goal to be more productive when getting home from work and not sitting on the couch and watching tv all night. I told myself I had to do five things every night before I could watch tv. So when I got up in the morning I would make a list and put it on the fridge. MY list would usually include cleaning, errands, and general day to day activities I had been slacking on. After a few weeks I realized that my routine had changed and I had reached my goal of being more productive without having to think about it. Which take us into step three.

Step 3: Break Down Your Goals

When setting goals break them down into smaller steps to make them more achievable. Also make sure you set specific guidelines; like the five things before I could watch tv. Everything we do in life has a process when you truly think about it. This should be the same for achieving our goals. If you can achieve your goal in one step then try to add more details or specifications to make it slightly more difficult.

Step 4: Recognize When you have reached your goal

Reaching your goal is going to depend on many different factors but it is important to recognize when you have reached your goal to avoid getting into another rut. Like I said earlier it took me a few weeks to achieve my goal. Giving myself 5 chores a day and sticking to that wasn’t a very challenging goal though. That is ok! I wanted to start myself on an achievable goal that wouldn’t take me long. That particular goal was to get me out of my rut and set a foundation to keep improving life.

Step 5: Set new Goals and Repeat the process

Congratulations! You have successfully achieved your goal. Now it is time to repeat the process, only this time set a new goal. It can be something along the same lines or multiple goals. It could be a goal that will take you years to complete. Just set another goal and work through the steps again. Just remember that your goals may change along the way and not every goal set will be achieved easily or at all.

If you take away anything take away this.

Do one thing a day that will make your life better tomorrow.

Weather it be working out, eating healthy, giving back, waking up earlier. Just do one small thing a day that will make your life better tomorrow because by doing one thing a day over time they are going to add up and amount to something much larger. Okay that seems like something pretty obvious. When you sit down and think about what the one things a day is going to be is when you will notice change.

I hope this post helps you to achieve your goals and leads you to a better life. I would love to hear all of your goals in the comment section. If you are looking for more motivational posts check out Motivational Monday post or Finding Motivation.

Motivational Monday

Monday has come once again. Always following the weekend. Monday will always come but motivation will not. Today is one of those days for me. Since the moment I have stepped out of bed I new it was gonna be a slow Monday. I know we all have these days weather there on a Monday or not we just cannot find motivation. So I am going to share with you how I try to create motivation.

Most of us work a consistent job schedule myself included and most days knowing that we have to get up knowing most of our day is going to be filled with work. Personally to me that is not motivational. So what I do is think about what I want to do after work. I know that when I am not working at my job I need to make the most of my time.

Get a good start to every day!

First I get a cup of coffee and my planner. This could be an actual planner, your phone, a note pad, anything you choose. All it needs to be is somewhere you can make a list and keep handy to look at it later. Personally I like a planner but you have to choose what works best for you. Then I take the 10 or 15 minutes I need to enjoy my cup of coffee and plan my day.

I take one day at a. I start by filling out everything I have to do that week. Pay bills, appointments, meetings, ect. Next I fill out my other ‘needs’ groceries, laundry, etc. for that day. Then I work on my ‘wants’. I reward my self with my wants once I complete my needs. So crafting, tv, painting my nails, ect. I found doing this not only motivates me but it lays out a plan for my day. It shows me what I need to do and help me prioritize my time.

I repeat this process when I get to work only much quicker. I am lucky to have a pretty laid back work environment where I have to prioritize my own day. So I look at my work calendar and prioritize my tasks. This helps me to see what I need to do that day and what I can work on for the next day if I have time.

By planning my days and listing it all out I can see what needs to be done and see what I have completed. The important thing is to keep things realistic. Do not make a long list of tasks to complete if you know you won’t have time to finish them. I also found this has helped to to be more productive and spend more time doing what I want because we all need to take a break from the hustle of life to do what we love. I do this every day not only days that I need motivation.

Inspire yourself.

On the days I need a little extra motivation I will spend my time before work or during lunch finding motivation. I search for inspiring photos, quotes, activities, songs, ect. I like to create a motivation board. It sometimes has a focus and other times is just what ever I want it to be. It can be for the day or the week or month or how ever long you want. I try not to do any longer than a week because I tend to forget about it. I usual search Pinterest to find pictures and quotes to post on my ‘board’. Then I open them in photoshop and create a photo collage ad get creative. This is something to create focus with little energy and effort. It is something that you can put as little or much energy into and make about anything.

Here is what I made today. None of these photos are mine and they can all be found on Pinterest this is for motivational purpose. The main focus is self improvement though health and wellness. It also motivates me to keep up with those things so I am in good shape for my wedding. I also added the succulents in coffee mugs because they are so cute and are a possible craft.

This took me probably 15 minutes but it helps me to see the goals I have set and to stay focused on them. These are things I want to focus on this week but next week my board could be completely different. I hope this helps you find your motivation.

It’s Been Awhile

Hello people of the internet. I though I would just let all of you know that I am alive and doing well. Their has been so much going on that I have neglected to do any thing with this blog. I believe the last you herd from me was that my Fiancé and I were looking for a house. Well, great news we found one!

We went through the entire process of mass amounts of paper work and waiting. It tested our signatures and patience. All and all we got our dream house and have been officially living their since July 4th. Talk about nostalgic when we say that independence day was the day we move out of his parents house and into our own home. It has been over a month already. Time flies when your having fun or unpacking boxes for that matter.

Now we can focus on our next big adventure, our wedding. Exactly 15 months from today is our wedding and it is so crazy to think about that. I am not prepared and I feel as if I am way behind on the planning process. Thankfully we planned our wedding for way after our engagement. I plan to do a more detailed post about this in the future and give you more specific details about our wedding.

For now I just wanted to let all of you know I am alive and well. I plan to do more short post like this in the future to keep this blog more of a journal style. I am coming to the conclusion that his is where I want to just free write to all of you who may be reading this.

Please if you are reading this let me know if you like this. It may even become a weekly or daily thing depending on how this goes.

How Brands are Causing us to Have Insecurities

All of us have our insecurities but it is up to us to over come then. In order to love others we must learn to love ourselves first. We have to look at ourselves in a positive mindset to see others positively as well.

The other day I was walking through the grocery store and I found myself in the cosmetic and bath section. I wanted to try some new shampoo and a different foundation. I would normally grab what I usually use off the shelf and not even think to read any of the packaging because it is what I would normally use but this time was different. I decided to take the time the read the labeling on some of the shampoo bottles.

I quickly realized that some of the wording on the bottles caused me to think about my hair type. You may be thinking this is a good thing right? Yes in some ways it is, obviously we need to know what our hair type is to choose the correct hair products. I am currently trying to get my hair to grow for my wedding so I know I was something nourishing and moisturizing. When looking at shampoo that falls into those category they often described that they were for dry damaged hair, frizzy hair, uncontrollable hair. I started to think, is my hair damaged? Is it uncontrollable? I noticed I was touching my hair and that I was insecure about how my hair looked as I was standing in the isle of the store.

After that I started to pay attention to the wording and marketing techniques that brands used. I went home and red some of the labels that  my other products used. I honestly was shocked. In todays society women and girls are strongly influenced by celebrities and trends in that current moment. Im sure this causes brands to frequently change their packaging. A large problem though is we as females feel we need to buy those new products to look good or be ‘cool’ or ‘beautiful’.

Why do we let brands control what beautiful is though? Why is it that most of us cannot leave the house without putting on some type of makeup to fee better about ourselves.

I know this is a very ranty post but if you have made it this far I just want you to know one thing. You are beautiful and you need to tell yourself that. Don’t let the wording that brands decide to use on their package determine who you are. Also I want you to comment down below of some of your favorite beauty products.

Things I Have Learned as a First Time Home Buyer and I Haven’t Even Bought a House Yet

My Fiancé and I have recently begun our house hunting process and I have learned a ton already. Before we started this process it was really intimidating to both of us and we had no idea if buying a house was the right decision for us. We quickly learned that the process is nothing like on TV.

Decide if buying a house is the right move for you.

Right now we are lucky because we are able to live in his parents basement. With both of us being recent college graduates it is a big help. The rent is cheep and their is a lot more perks. Now that we are graduated and engaged we are ready to move out though. We originally thought we would rent something but quickly reconsidered after researching home for rent. The cost of rent is around $1000 (not including utilities) for the type of house we were looking for.

After finding that out we realized we could buy something for a cheeper monthly payment. I am not saying buying a house is right for everyone but we know we are going to live near where we live now and decided not to waist money renting.

So when deciding to move look in to all possibilities and decide which is best for you. We know buying is right for us at this time.

Get pre-approved for a mortgage.

Before you even start looking at houses contact a mortgage broker and get approved. We are lucky enough to have a family friend who is a real estate agent, so she recommended an awesome mortgage broker. We contacted her, emailed her with some information, and two days later got approved for a $150,000 loan.

Figure out what you can actually afford.

Just because we got approved for $150,000 does not mean that is what we can afford. Our real estate agent helped us figure out what we can actually afford. My Fiancé and I decided that we could afford a $700 monthly mortgage payment and a $5,000 down payment. This determined that we could afford a house that is roughly $130,000. We probably won’t go above $120,000 though.

Now I mentioned a down payment. Yes you have to make a down payment on top of your loan. This shows the bank you are willing to put money in up front. Most home buyers have to put a 20% down payment but usually that does not apply to first time home buyers. For first time home buyers usually a $5,000 down payment is enough but the more you can put down the smaller your monthly payment will be.

Consider all the additional expenses.

Buying a house is a major investment and involves more than just paying your mortgage every month. Something we never considered was property tax. We took a tour of the very first house we liked and fell in love. It had everything we were looking for but when figuring the monthly payment it was over our monthly budget. Since we are first time home buyers and are not making the traditional 20% down payment our property taxes have to be paid monthly. So when looking at a house look at the property taxes and determine what works best for you.

Other things to consider are utilities. Water, gas, electric, and trash all cost extra. Also location, location, location. We quickly learned that one of the cities we were looking in was expensive. The homes we could afford were not what we were looking for.

Set requirements for what you are looking for.

Working with a real estate agent can sometimes be hard. We are lucky to be working with a family friend but I couldn’t imagine going through this with any one else. Make sure you are clear about what you want in your house and out side your house. Keep in mind how long you will be living there. Our real estate agent brought up some very good points. You have to think ahead for your future and your house. Will you have pets or kids living their? Will you have family or friends come stay with you? Will you rent a room out? These are all questions to ask yourself and keep in mind when looking at homes.

When setting requirements you will have hard points and soft points. We know that if a house doesn’t have a garage then its a no. We also would like three bedrooms and two bathrooms. We have a big family so space to entertain is very important. The yard is also important to us because we will have at least one dog. This is a soft point for us. A couple neighborhoods we really like have parks and trails near by, so if the yard is smaller that is ok for us.

When looking for a house try to imagine your self in five years, it helps a lot. It completely changed our perspective of what we wanted in a house. It may also effect the location and school district the house is in.

I hope this helped with your house hunt. Please take a look around and enjoy other posts. Also leave a comment if you want to see more content like this.

Most girls dream of this moment their entire life and when it finally happened it was as amazing as I always dreamed. I had no idea he was going to propose and was completely surprised.

On March 5, 2017 Conner’s planning and plotting had finally paid off. It was a Sunday. The sun was shining but the wind was cold and you could tell it wasn’t quite time for spring yet. The day before his sister had asked me if we would be her models for a photo shoot. I was happy to help her out, little did I know this photo shoot was so much more than a school project.

We woke up that morning and took our time getting ready. We had on outfits that would match and look good in photos. He didn’t rush me while doing my hair and makeup which is unusual  for him. Once we were ready we all loaded into my car and Conner drove us.

It took us a while to get to our destination but when we did we were ready to go. We went to Cascade metro park to take photos and although it was a cold day it was beautiful outside. The trail was a loop, the plan (so I thought) was to just walk all the way around and pose for picture along the way. We made several stops along the way until we reached a look-out point. I was excited to see the view and walked all the way to the end. I remember the cold wind blowing directly into my face and the view was beautiful.

I didn’t realize Conner wasn’t by my side because I was so mesmerized by the view. All I heard was him calling my name and I turned around. At first I didn’t see him until I looked down and there he was on one knee. While he spoke to me his face showed many emotions. His eyes showed me he was nervous but his smile showed me he was excited.

The moment my life changed forever.

Him holding the ring I was shocked how beautiful it was. He did an amazing job of picking out the ring and he did it all by himself. When I said yes he took the ring and slipped it onto my cold finger. Although I had my hands in my coat pocket they were still cold.

In all the excitement of the moment I completely forgot his sister and her boyfriend were photographing us. After taking several photos on the look-out we moved on to our next spot on the trail. Our smiles were big and I remember us giggling frequently through the rest of the day.

Once we had walked the entire loop of the trail we all got back into the car. The surprises didn’t end there though. He had the whole day planned. We drove to meet my parents and sisters at an Italian restaurant we ate at for the first time only a few weeks earlier. His parents met us there as well. We arrived to a large table with balloons, where we enjoyed lunch with our families. Once we were done eating the restaurant staff gave us free ice cream and congratulations.

After that we went home and enjoyed each other company for the rest of the day. March 5th, 2017 will be a day I will always remember.
I am going to be doing an entire wedding series so if you want to hear more about our plans stay tuned for another post coming very soon. Also follow me on Instagram to know when I make new posts.

10 Tips for Keeping Healthy

Four months ago many of us set the New Years resolution of getting healthy, loosing weight, or something along those lines. My personal goal is to create a healthy life style and look good for summer. Now that springs here we are looking at our progress and may not be happy with how we are doing so far. So I am going to share with you ten tips of things I do to keep healthy.

1. Eat Clean

Personally what I eat affects how I feel. So I try to eat real whole foods. I make sure to have plenty of fruits and vegetables in my house. I also avoid buying food I know I shouldn’t have. Then when I want ice cream or candy I have to go out of my way to get some.

2. Drink ALOT of water

Water is liquid gold. Drinking water has so many amazing benefits that we often forget about. Not only does our body need it to function but it does so much more. Water helps with hair growth, weight loss, clear skin, and digestion, just to name a few. A glass of water in the morning helps to wake you up and a glass of water before bed helps prevent heart attacks.

3. Exercise

You don’t have to hit the gym every day for three hours to get healthy. You actually don’t have to go to the gym at all. When it comes to exercise any type of physical activity is better than none. The most important thing is that you are having fun and enjoy the exercise you are doing. My favorites are going for walks, going to trampoline parks, and swimming. There is so many forms of exercise that you could do outside the gym that you may have never thought of.

4. Sleep

Yep thats right! Getting the proper amount of sleep can keep you healthy. Try to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep. Getting to little or to much sleep can have negative effects on your body.

5. Wash your hands

Some water, soap, and time can boost your immune system and fight of harmful germs.

6. Stay Social

Keep healthy physically and mentally. Avoid turning inwards and keeping to yourself. Try to make time for friends and family and spend time with them. I try to see a person and create a social interaction outside my house or work at least once a week. Plus taking the time to hang out with friends and family is a great break from other things you may have going on.

7. Be positive

Again with mental health. Keeping positive mentally with help keep you healthy physically. I find as soon as I have negative thought about something in my life I automatically doom myself from succeeding. I would rather fail because I could truly not do something then fail because I was negative in my mind and it reflected in my body.

8. Keep things neat and organized

We all have our own standards when it comes to keeping things neat and organized but by following those guidelines we will help keep things in balance. I know personally when my room is a mess it effects my sleeping and productivity. By keeping things neat and organized I am not stressing about the mess and I am able to focus on other parts of my life.

9. Don’t Stress

Having stress effects us not only mentally but physically as well. So make sure to do what you can to relieve, reduce and avoid stress. If you have stress about something you cannot control then stay social and talk with a friend or professional about it.

10. Love

Have a supportive relationship! Weather it be with a family member, friends, significant other, or even activity. Doing what you love is important.

Here’s to Something New…

When I first started my blog almost a year ago my main focus was DIY, or so I thought. I realize now that my focus was crafting. I love to craft and being creative but it truly works your mind. Lately I my mind hasn’t been where it needs to be, to happily craft like I want. I never do anything I don’t want to so I stopped crafting, which meant I stopped blogging.

I had time to take a step back an evaluate my life. I am at a time in my life where things are changing and I am experiencing major life events. I realized that DIY does not only apply to crafting but so many aspects in our lives.

I want my blog to be a place to share with others and connects with them. I want to share my creative ideas along with other things happening in my life. I want this to be a place for people to come and read about me and my story. I want my readers to know that their are other people experiencing what they may be going through weather it be good, bad or creative. I want my readers to know that I am a real person with a real life.

Something to look forward to.

From now on I am going to share with you not only my crafts and creative ideas but things happening in my life and world around me. I want all of you to know me and feel connected to me through life and creativity. I want to create a community where we can all go to get guidance, reassurance, and support. Connect with other through comments, to hear not only about me but about others as well.

Here is to new adventures and experiences.

Do you want to get to know me better?

Hi my name is Marissa and welcome to my blog. I started blogging in April 2016 as a way to not only share my creative ideas but also as something for me to look back on and see where life has taken me. When I first started blogging I didn’t think about others reading what wrote, I just sat down and wrote. I had no plans for the future of my blog and just took it day by day. Now I realize that blogging is a way for me to connect with like minded people. I love creating things and being able to share what I do and my ideas with other people makes me happy.

My Family

I have been a creative person since I was a child. My parents Jen (my mom) and Mike (my dad) got married and many years later I came along. I was born and raised in a small town with not a lot to do. When I was younger I found creative ways to keep myself entertained. I was an only child until I was five years old when my sister Kaitlynn was born. I hated her. She cried all the time and took up all my moms attention but as we got older I learned to love her, plus she stopped crying. Then when I was seven my youngest sister, Makayla, was born. Up until four years ago she was my minnie me and I hated it. Doing as a stereotypical little sister did, took my stuff, got me in trouble and wanted to do everything I did. She annoyed me to no end but when I graduated high school and left for college I realized how much she truly loved me and I love her.

I attended public school my whole life and never rode the buss. I could walk to every school I went to. I attended elementary school till fifth grade. Thats where I realized art was my favorite class. I started sixth grade in middle school and also joined the choir and orchestra that year too. Choir ended that year as well but I stayed in orchestra until I graduated high school. I played the violin. My senior year of high was definitely the best. I took so many classes the first three years that when I became a senior I had one class left to take, English. So I filled the rest of my schedule with orchestra and art. I took four art classes that year. Three advanced art studio classes and an advanced photography class. I was also a straight A student that year. In 2013 I turned 18, graduated high school and successfully completed my first semester of college as a photography major. I completed another semester of photography and decided to change my major to early education. I stuck with that for a semester before I changed my major to undecided. I stayed undecided until I had taken all my general education classes and could either choose a major or quit college. I never quit. So I chose to get a Bachelors degree in  Organizational Supervision. It was a fancy was of saying business management. A quick two years later I graduated college on December 17, 2016.

Since Graduation

I graduated less than a month ago and honestly it was the most exciting and scariest time of my life. I was so excited because all my hard work had finally paid off but at the same time I was terrified. I was starting a new chapter in my life and I had no idea where it was going to take me. My last semester of school I started working at my families furniture store in the office. I was offered a full time job when I graduated and could work there till I found another job. What my family didn’t know was that I wasn’t looking for another job. Im still not looking. I have been learning so much about the business and myself that I plan to stay where I am. I enjoy my job and that every day I have something different to work on. I have been promoted to managing the social media as well as helping with other advertising. I also work on the sales floor and have been learning a lot about our products. When I am not busy with either of those I am cleaning, decorating, and keeping busy. There is never a dull moment at the store. Along with working on the store I decided I wanted to ‘work’ for myself. That is why I decided to start my own blog and relaunch at the start of 2017. I have been working so hard on my blog these last couple months and seeing how far it has come already is a total pay off. Along with my blog I create youtube videos of the crafts I make for people learn for there as well.

My Other Interests and Fun Facts

I like think of myself as an old soul. This is because I am often told I act much older than my actual age. I am 21 (next week I will be 22). I have many skills and talents that other people my age do not have and this has been the case my entire life. I have always made friendships with people much older than be but eventually they drift away because somewhere in societal norms, it is strange for a 30 or 40 something year old to be friends with a 20 year old. It doesn’t bother me though. Now I have my blog where I can share my ideas and connect with like minded people. Hopefully if you are still reading this you are one of those people.

I love learning new things particularly ones that involve using my hands. I can’t stand just sitting and watching tv. I have to be moving my hands as I watch or else I feel like it is waisted time. When I was young, I don’t remember how old, my baby sitter who at the time was an elderly lady taught me how to knit and to this day I still know how. I am not amazing at it but I can knit simple things when I want to. I have also taught my self to crochet which I prefer more than knitting. I enjoy a variety of crafting styles though and I often find myself extensively exploring one area before moving onto another. I always come back to it at some point. Along with knitting and crocheting I know how to sew which I learned how to do when I was nine. It comes in handy very often. I also know how to use power tools for woodworking. There are many more styles of crafting I know how to do and will go more into my crafting credentials in a post later on.

I hope this helps you to get to know me a little better. I am positive you will continue to get to know me more as time goes on. If you would like to see more posts like this and about things going on in my life make sure to stop back next Wednesday. Also feel free to leave a comment of any other specific post of information you would like to see.
